Find out how to choose a circular saw with this guide

Learn how to choose a circular saw or best track saw and find out what points to consider when choosing the right one.


How to choose a circular saw? The most common is to find discs from 150 to 600 millimeters. In order to recognize which one is best suited to the cutting requirements, the maximum thickness of the sawn material should be considered to be a quarter of the tool diameter.

In addition, the saw holder must not occupy more than one third of the blade, and this dimension must be known before the size is chosen.

Cutting angles

The two main angles are the so-called attack or angle, which varies between 6º -negative- and 35º -positive-, and the simple angle. The criteria for choosing the right angle have to do with the quality of the sawing, the type and hardness of the material, as well as the feed speed and the position of the disc in relation to the material to be sawn.
In general, saws are divided according to the type of configuration they handle: direct drive or worm drive.

The more power, the more cutting capacity. The most practical for DIYers range from 1,100 to 1,600 Watts.

Depth of cut

You can adjust the cutting depth by unlocking the base and setting it to the desired level, to cut more or less thick elements.

When indicating the cutting capacity of these machines, manufacturers refer to the depth of cut with the machine straight (at 90°) and with the machine tilted (at 45°). Ideally, at 90º you should not have less than 55 mm cutting capacity and at 45º you can cut up to 43 mm.

Types of circular saws

Circular Saw

It allows straight, precise and fast cuts. They are equipped with an electric motor whose power ranges from 500 to 1,400 W, reaching speeds of more than 4,500 revolutions per minute.

They have a protective casing, which allows them to be handled without risk, as it covers their edge, and allows sawdust waste to be disposed of in a controlled manner.

They are equipped with a locking switch, which prevents the tool from being operated by accident, a guide that helps to move the tool straight, and a base that allows the saw to be tilted.

Some models come equipped with bags to collect the sawdust.

Table or bench saw

It uses the same principle as large saws: the machinery remains fixed and the operator must bring the wood to the edge to make the cut.

The toothed disc protrudes above the surface of the work table, which serves as a support and guide for the material.

Some models have mobile supports that allow you to regulate the depth of cut in the wood or adjust the cutting angle. It is used to achieve fast cuts in large pieces.

Miter Saw

How to choose a circular saw? Regarding the work table. This structure allows the vertical movement of the saw, i.e. from top to bottom. This type of woodworking machinery performs fast and precise cross-cutting. They are commonly used to split long pieces of wood, allowing multiple precise cuts to be made in a matter of seconds. This type of saw commonly acts at a 90° angle to the work table, although this angle can be varied according to the needs of the job.

Radial Saw

Like the miter saw, it is also mounted on a structure that keeps it raised from the working plane. The structure has an arm that allows a circular movement with the saw.
In addition, depending on the type of transmission of the tool, the saw offers two basic configurations:

  • Direct Drive: In this configuration, the motor is perpendicular to the blade mounted on the end of the motor shaft. In general, direct transmission is the most suitable.
  • Worm drive: also known as hypoid, in this configuration the motor is parallel to the blade and uses a set of gears to rotate the drive at a right angle. Due to its gearing system, this style can offer more torque when cutting.

Types of discs

Discs differ by their number of teeth; the greater the number, the finer and more precise the cut.

A 16, 18 or 20 tooth disc is used to saw structural or rough wood.
A 24 or 36 tooth disc is used for finer cuts in brushed wood or panels of less than 2mm.

When the blade has 40 teeth it makes more precise cuts, ideal for hard woods. And if the blades have 60 teeth, they are very fast, and are used to cut chipboard, melanin or other veneered woods.
